Love Your Sister

He’s got that husky voice that we can all recognize, charming smile and acting skills that came to prominence on a national level by the age of 21 with his role in Channel Ten’s hit show The Secret Life of Us. Samuel Johnson was everywhere and was one of the rising stars of the Australian Film and TV Industry. But in 2005 after the final season of The Secret Life Of Us Sam turned his back on the industry. Sam has been witness to a lot of tragedy in his life, losing his mother to suicide before he turned one, later in life a close friend also committed suicide and in his early 20’s at the peek of his career he lost his girlfriend to suicide as well.

But this has never deterred Sam’s effort to give selflessly for the ones he loves, and he has never fallen victim to the challenges that his life has presented him. So when Sam’s sister Connie was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer he jumped straight to action on a unicycle. Sam is on a 15,000km journey around Australia in an attempt to raise $1 million for breast cancer research. All money raised will go towards the Garvan Research Foundation, a world leader in breast cancer research, and the Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group, which provides financial assistance and emotional support to cancer patients and their families.

Sam’s Love Your Sister journey on his unicycle is an attempt to raise awareness by reminding Australian women to be breast aware in an effort to promote early detection of breast cancer and improve survival rates. Sam and Connie’s message to Australian women through Love Your Sister is simple, “Don’t fall into the Booby Trap – Be Breast Aware!”

Sam started on Friday the 15th of February, 2013 in Melbourne and started to make his way through Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. So far he has completed 12,399 km’s and has already raised over $1 million!

Connie has fought cancer three times in her life, and Sam has been by her side ever step of the way. But this time Connie’s illness is terminal and she has minimal time left.

Sam’s unicycle journey around Australia will not only raise awareness and funds for research on breast cancer it will also break the world record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle. Sam will be going up Mt Kosciusko, Ayres Rock and down into Lake Eyre as well as performing a series of ‘challenges’ set by the general public throughout his journey.
